Photoshoot Planning: Costume, Location & Lighting

Costume, location and lighting are all fundamental to the final front cover image. A music magazine has a similar style that appears to be universal throughout the mainstream media world of music magazines.

I have been particular in my choices to ensure that my front cover image will be individual but follows the conventions of a music magazine.

The model I have chosen will be in the role of an young Alternative, new and upcoming artist (taking styling inspiration from Lorde, on the left) therefore, I will ensure to take a range of shots including a medium close-up (as it is a popular shot for many females on the cover of music magazines), long shots, close ups, and shots with a lot of negative space so text can ideally fit around it for my double page spread. I will also include props relating to music such as, guitars. Because the artist is new and upcoming, I will take a range of shots will various body language and facial expressions- some shots playful and quirky to show personality and some shots more serious to connote power.

Costume: The main costume for the artist is the red tartan dress on the right paired with a leather jacket. This costume is for the more, to say solemn shots as the tartan and leather gives a punk edge, and is also on trend. This will relate to the genre of the artist herself. I have also picked other costumes that contrast this, for example a floral dress. This is to show different sides of the artist.

Location:I found that for the cover shoot I either wanted a black or white backdrop. Therefore, I plan to shoot most of my shots against a white wall that can easily be edited out. I also will shoot outdoors at night, so there will be a dark background with hints of leaves to make the shoot look more conventional, rather than a block black colour. This will also put the focus on the model. When analysing current magazines such as NME and Q, the majority of cover talents were shot against a plain background to ensure that the subject themselves is the main feature of the magazine and this is the effect I will go for with my front cover. It gives it a fresh and contemporary feel.

Lighting: To ensure I will shoot an extremely detailed photo there has to be almost no natural lighting and I will rely almost entirely on the flash from the camera. Natural lighting affects the detail of the facial features because it drowns out the colour.

I will also photoshop my photos, in order to give a professional finish. The Camera I will use to shoot is a NIKON D3200, in order to get the best quality.
